Stylecraft Special DK is my absolute favourite! Available in a wonderful array of shades which Stylecraft adds to on a regular basis, it crochets as well as it knits, making this a great yarn for garments and blankets.
Add to this it being machine washable and tumble dryer safe, Special DK is extremely hard-wearing and it’s definitely my go-to yarn.
Stylecraft Batik DK comes in a close second. Designed primarily for crochet, Batik comes in a range of gorgeous heathered shades, which incidentally coordinate well with Special DK.
The 50g balls work out a little more expensive, but the finished look is worth it, in my opinion.
Another blanket-making favourite is King Cole Cottonsoft DK. It’s light and cool, so perfect for baby blankets, and as soft as a kitten. The shades harmonise really well, making it ideal for motifs with lots of colour, like African Flowers. (I’ll finish this project eventually!)
Paintbox Cotton DK is a new find. It comes in a HUGE selection of shades and crochets like a dream. It’s firmer than the King Cole, which makes it great for structural projects such as bags and cosies.
It’s available in 50g balls and also mini 10g balls, which are perfect for multicolour makes and amigurumi.
Last but in no ways least is Caron Simply Soft. If a projects calls for aran weight yarn, this is the one I reach for. Available in a generous range of solid shades and the wonderful Ombre selection, Simply Soft is lovely to crochet with and produces a smooth fabric that drapes nicely.
